The Beginner’s Guide To BBL

Beach season is coming up. You know what that means: sun’s out, buns out!

Of course, this might provoke a little anxiety in regular beachgoers and bikini-wearers — and that’s completely normal. Our perceptions of our own bodies influence how we feel about ourselves. This is especially true when beaches and bikinis are in the mix.

That’s why some people choose to get a Brazilian butt lift, also known as a BBL. Here’s everything you need to know about the procedure.

What Is A BBL?
A Brazilian butt lift is a type of cosmetic surgery that enhances the size and shape of the buttocks. It involves removing fat from one part of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and transplanting it to the buttocks to add volume and improve contour. Think of it as transferring money from your checking to your savings account!

Why Get A BBL?
People get BBLs for various cosmetic reasons, primarily to enhance the projection and volume of their buttocks, while also correcting their “hip dip” deformity. Some common motivations include:

  • To increase the size of the buttocks
  • To improve the shape and contour of the buttocks
  • To enhance the overall proportions and balance of the body
  • To boost self-confidence and body image

A qualified candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) typically has the following characteristics:

  • Good overall health with no (or well-controlled) medical conditions that could complicate surgery or healing
  • Realistic expectations about the results of the procedure
  • Non-smoker, or willing to quit smoking before and after surgery
  • Adequate amount of fat to be removed and transferred to the buttocks
  • Good skin elasticity in the target area to ensure a smooth, natural-looking result
  • Ability to take time off work and avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for several weeks after surgery

A consultation with our expert medical team will help determine if you are a good candidate for a BBL.

Are BBLs Dangerous?
Like any plastic surgery procedure, BBLs come with associated risks. However, risks of complications or adverse results can be avoided when you choose to work with an experienced, qualified surgeon, like Dr. Kashan.

Dr. Kashan serves his patients with over ten years of reconstructive surgery experience and extensive education from the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. He has worked on over thousands of successful BBLs, achieving amazing results and contour. You can see his BBL work here.

How Does The Procedure Work?
After you have had your consultation with Dr. Kashan, his team will coordinate your surgical journey with you. On the day of the procedure, you will meet Dr. Kashan at his state-of-the-art outpatient surgical center.

Anesthesia: BBLs are usually performed under general anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

Liposuction: Fat is removed from one or more areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, or back, using liposuction. The fat is then purified and processed to remove any excess fluid or blood.

Fat Transfer: The purified fat is then injected into the buttocks using special cannulas. The fat is carefully placed in multiple layers to create a natural-looking result and to ensure maximum survival of the transplanted fat.

Incision Closure: The incisions are then closed using very fine sutures and sterile dressings.

The entire procedure can take several hours, and the recovery period typically lasts several weeks, during which time the patient should avoid sitting directly on the buttocks and follow Dr. Kashan’s instructions carefully.

What To Expect From Recovery
Dr. Kashan will discuss your BBL options with you and develop a comprehensive plan for receiving the best results that is tailored to your desires and expectations. Recovery from a BBL typically takes several weeks and involves some discomfort and restrictions.

Expect to feel a little pain and discomfort after the surgery; these can be managed with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Kashan. Swelling and bruising are common and usually subside within a few days to a week.

We recommend taking a minimum of one to two weeks off from work to rest and recover after your Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. During this time, you will wear a special swelling-control garment, and receive detailed aftercare instructions from Dr. Kashan. That being said, many of our patients have reported feeling healed and healthy enough to return to their desk jobs within just days following their surgery.

You don’t have to completely give up your routine entirely. Maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in light exercise as recommended by Dr. Kashan can actually promote proper healing and optimal results. And we’ll make sure to schedule regular follow-up appointments with you to monitor the healing process and ensure that everything is progressing as expected.
