Your Definitive Guide To Liposuction

Trying to get rid of excess fat? Let’s talk about liposuction.

Everyone’s body is shaped differently. We’re all human, and some bodies just like to hold onto excess fat deposits, no matter the amount of greens and exercise you put in. This is totally normal, but it can still conjure negative feelings and self-perception. If stubborn fat is causing you significant stress or self-esteem issues, you might want to consider liposuction.

Liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure to remove excess fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. It’s usually performed as an outpatient procedure and is completed in a couple of hours. Read on to discover everything you need to know before embarking on your liposuction journey.

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a body contouring method that removes fat via suction from the body. It’s important to note here is that it’s not a weight loss method — rather, it’s a fat loss method that targets very specific areas of the body. Liposuction can be performed in many areas of the body in which stubborn fat persists. These areas include the double chin, back of the neck, stomach, abdomen, love handles and the upper arms.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
Good candidates for this procedure are individuals who are near their ideal body weight, have good skin elasticity and have pockets of excess fat in specific areas of the body. Additionally, good candidates should be non-smokers, have stable weight and be in good overall health, physically and emotionally. A consultation with our medical team can help determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

How Does The Procedure Work?
Your Kashan surgical team will welcome you into the procedure room or preoperative area and make sure you’re comfortable and well taken care of throughout your visit. This procedure can be performed with either general or local anesthesia. As long as this is a safe option for his patients, Dr. Kashan usually prefers to perform liposuction with general anesthesia to allow maximum comfort for his patients while also ensuring the best overall results.

Additionally, this procedure is never performed in the office. Most of the time, it’s completed in an operating room and is often coupled with other surgeries.

During the procedure, small specialized cannulas are inserted through tiny imperceivable incisions made in the skin. The fat is then suctioned out through these cannulas. Dr. Kashan is able to perform the entirety of this surgery safely and accurately through these small incisions.

There are a few different types of liposuction. Dr. Kashan treats patients primarily with power assisted liposuction, as it’s extremely safe and tends to give the best results consistently. It’s also excellent for addressing very stubborn pockets of fat.

He also uses a method known as tumescent liposuction, which involves injecting an anesthetic solution of lidocaine with epinephrine into the fat before it’s suctioned out. The solution aids with drainage and leads to less bruising, less blood loss, swelling, inflammation and pain post-operatively. Dr. Kashan also uses tranexamic acid during the surgery, which helps reduce the overall swelling noted after a procedure like this.

Dr. Kashan will discuss your liposuction options with you and develop a comprehensive plan for receiving the best results that is tailored to your desires and expectations.

What To Expect From Recovery
Once your procedure is finished, you may notice swelling and bruising in the targeted area. That’s perfectly normal! Dr. Kashan’s medical team will provide you with compression garments or elastic bandages to help reduce any associated pain.

Additionally, some fluid may leak from the incision sites for several days. This is also commonplace and shouldn’t be a cause for concern. You might receive antibiotics to reduce the risk of an infection throughout your healing process.

Most patients can get up and walk around after the procedure; many return to work and their normal activities around two to three days post-op. However, everybody’s healing journey is different. It’s okay to take as much time as you need to get your body feeling in pristine shape.

Keep in mind that liposuction works best when you maintain your ideal weight. If you gain weight after the procedure, the fatty deposits may return, or show up in a different area of your body.
